Zambia once known as Northern Rhodesia has developed
a booming tourist industry mostly based around the Zambezi River.
The development of this river-based tourism is the result of one of
the wonders of the natural world Victoria Falls, which the locals
call Mosi-Oa-Tunya “Smoke that Thunders”. David Livingstone, the
first white man to see the falls, named the falls after the British
monarch of the time Queen Victoria. The falls are 1680m (more than a
mile) wide and 108m (355 feet) high, about twice the size of the
Niagara Falls on the USA – Canadian border, at times the mist
rising from the crashing waters is so thick that it can be seen for
miles. Like Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls is also part of a border
between two countries Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Zambezi River which feeds the Victoria falls is
also home to some of the best white water rafting in the world,
kayaking and jet boating are also available on the river. Of course
water sports are not the only activities available for the adventure
seeker, abseiling and bungee jumping are also available.
For those who prefer to live life at a slower pace,
Lake Kariba in the south of Zambia and Lake Tanganika in the north
offer fishing, diving, water-skiing as well as bird watching and
game viewing. One of the best ways to enjoy the myriad activities
offered on the lakes is on a houseboat.
If you wish to explore and experience the wildlife
of Southern Africa, Zambia offers a wide selection of game parks
including South Luangwa National Park, the Lower Zambezi National
Park and the Kafue Reserve to mention but a few.
Zambia is an experience you will never forget.
Whether you are looking for adventure or the natural beauty of the
heart of Africa.
